A Home Away From Home: Stay at Williams Estate, St Helena Island

When you think about escaping to a remote island, you probably imagine pristine landscapes, stunning ocean views, and a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Well, that’s exactly what I found when I stayed at Williams Estate on St Helena Island. If you’re planning a trip to this unique and historic island, let me tell you why Williams Estate should be at the top of your accommodation list.

Where is Williams Estate?

Williams Estate is tucked away in a picturesque part of St Helena, offering a perfect balance of tranquility and convenience. It’s located in Half Tree Hollow, one of the more developed areas of the island, just a short drive from the capital, Jamestown. From here, you can easily explore the island’s history, natural beauty, and local culture while having a comfortable retreat to return to at the end of the day.

The estate sits in an elevated position, giving guests a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged terrain that makes St Helena so unique. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee on the veranda or watching the sunset after a long day of exploring, the scenery never gets old.

What Williams Estate Offers

Staying at Williams Estate feels less like a typical guest house experience and more like staying at a friend’s cozy island home. It’s a self-catering accommodation, which means you get the privacy and freedom to enjoy your stay at your own pace. The estate is well-equipped with everything you need for a comfortable and memorable visit. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Spacious Living Area: The estate has a warm and welcoming feel, with a spacious lounge area perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. There’s a TV if you fancy a quiet evening in, but honestly, with the views outside, you might not need it!

  • Fully Equipped Kitchen: One of the highlights of staying here is the full kitchen. It’s stocked with all the essentials, so whether you’re making breakfast, a light snack, or a full meal, you have everything you need. There’s even a local supermarket nearby where you can pick up fresh ingredients.

  • Comfortable Bedrooms: A good night’s sleep is guaranteed, thanks to the comfortable beds and peaceful surroundings. The rooms are airy and well-maintained, making it easy to unwind.

  • Private Swimming Pool: Yes, you read that right! Williams Estate has its own swimming pool, which is a rare luxury on St Helena. Taking a dip in the pool on a warm island day is the perfect way to relax.

  • Outdoor Space: The estate features a lovely outdoor area where you can soak up the sun, enjoy a meal al fresco, or simply take in the island views.

Amenities Close By

One of the things that makes Williams Estate such a great place to stay is its proximity to key amenities. You’re never too far from the essentials, which is a big plus when you’re on an island with limited infrastructure.

  • Supermarket: Just a few minutes away, there’s a well-stocked supermarket where you can grab groceries, snacks, and any essentials you may need.

  • Local Restaurants & Cafés: If you don’t feel like cooking, there are some fantastic local eateries nearby where you can enjoy delicious island cuisine.

  • Petrol Station: If you’re renting a car to explore the island (which I highly recommend), the nearest petrol station is just a short drive away.

  • Shops & Services: From small convenience stores to local markets, you’ll find plenty of places to shop for souvenirs, gifts, and other items.

Attractions Nearby

St Helena might be a small island, but it’s packed with incredible sights and experiences. Staying at Williams Estate puts you in an excellent position to explore some of the island’s best attractions. Here are a few must-visit spots nearby:

Jamestown (10-Minute Drive)

The capital of St Helena, Jamestown, is full of history and charm. You’ll find beautiful colonial buildings, quaint shops, and several great spots for food and drinks. It’s also home to Jacob’s Ladder, a steep set of 699 steps leading up to the top of Ladder Hill. If you’re feeling adventurous, give it a go—it’s a great workout with rewarding views!

High Knoll Fort (5-Minute Drive)

This historic fort is one of St Helena’s most iconic landmarks. Dating back to the 18th century, it offers spectacular panoramic views of the island and is a fantastic spot for photography. It’s also a great place for a picnic!

Napoleon’s House & Tomb (25-30 Minute Drive)

One of St Helena’s most famous historical sites, Longwood House, was home to Napoleon during his exile. The house is beautifully preserved, and the surrounding gardens are stunning. A short distance away, you can also visit Napoleon’s original tomb in the peaceful Sane Valley.

Napoleon’s Tomb & House in Longwood is around a 25-30 Min drive from Williams Estate, making the perfect base for exploration

Jonathan the Tortoise (7-Minute Drive)

No trip to St Helena is complete without meeting Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal. Located at Plantation House, he has been roaming the gardens for over 190 years!

Diana’s Peak National Park (25-Minute Drive)

If you love nature and hiking, Diana’s Peak is a must-visit. It’s the highest point on the island and offers breathtaking views of the entire landscape. The hike up is surrounded by lush vegetation and unique wildlife, making it one of my favorite island experiences.

Sandy Bay Beach (30-45 Minute Drive)

If you’re looking for a peaceful beach setting, Sandy Bay is worth the drive. It’s one of the island’s most dramatic coastal areas, with black volcanic sand and towering cliffs.
